Saying education is key to the economic future of the province, Premier Brian Gallant has announced tuition will be free for students whose families make 60 thousand dollars or less a year. They will have to attend a publicly funding post-secondary institution in the province to be eligible.

The federal government provides grants to low and middle income students and now the province will make up the difference between the federal grant and the cost of tuition.
The M-L-A for Saint John Harbour, Dr. Ed Doherty once served in a previous government as Minister for Post Secondary Education. He says this might stem the tide of young people leaving the province.

Enrollment in recent years has dropped with tuition and public funding going up.
