Friday Morning Sports For July 24th

Canada set a new national record for gold medals won at the Pan American Games with 65 as water skier Whitney McClintock took first place in the women’s slalom event. Kate Campbell of Fredericton won silver in women’s karate. It was Canada over Mexico 96-76 in men’s basketball to move within one win of a first ever medal.

The Canadian Little league Intermediate Tournament is set to start at noonhour at Memorial Field, continuing with three games a day until next Thursday when the final is played. Opening ceremonies take place at 5:30, followed by a 7:00 game featuring Quebec against Team NB. Six teams from across the country will compete to represent Canada at the Intermediate World Series in August.

In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Alpines lost to the Fredericton Royals 8-7. The Alpines play a doubleheader tomorrow at 4, hosting Chatham.

In the Majors, Jacoby Ellsbury finished a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs while Chase Headley hit a three run double in the first inning as the Yankees beat Baltimore 9-3 to sweep the series….Russell Martin homered, doubled and drove in three runs while Josh Donaldson homered against his former team as the Blue Jays downed Oakland 5-2….Jose Altuve’s walkoff homer in the bottom of the 9th giving Houston a 5-4 win over the Red Sox who are winless since the All-Star break and have the worst record in the American League.

In the National League, Clayton Kershaw flirted with a perfect game but wound up with a three hitter as the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the Mets 3-0.

A couple of trades in the Majors……The Astros acquire lefthander Scott Kazmir from Oakland for a couple of minor league prospects and Pittsburgh get veteran third baseman Aramis Ramirez from Milwaukee in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Lou Lamoriello, who built the New Jersey Devils into Stanley Cup winners, named the new General Manager of the Leafs.
