In the Majors, Brett Gardner hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the New York Yankees a 6-5 win over Tampa Bay. Yankee slugger Aaron Judge lost part of a tooth in the celebration. The Yankees now trail the idle Boston Red Sox in the American League East by just half a game……Steve Pearce hit a grand slam homer in the bottom of the 10th inning for an 8-4 win over Oakland and series sweep by the Toronto Blue Jays…….The Washington Nationals tied a major league record by hitting five home runs in one inning for a 15-2 win over Milwaukee…….Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in four runs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 for their third straight win. The Cubs lead the Central Division by a game and a half over Milwaukee.
In other play, it was Cleveland 2 Los Angeles Angels 1….Miami 4 Cincinnati 1……Arizona 4 St. Louis 0 and San Diego 7 NY Mets 5.
In New Brunswick Senior Baseball, the Saint John Alpines over the Moncton Fisher Cats 12-7 with Dan Taylor getting the win. Ron Barton of the Alpines went 3 for 4 with two doubles. The Alpines are in Fredericton tonight.
Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman John Urschel, a doctoral candidate in applied mathematics at M-I-T, suddenly announced his retirement at the age of 26, two days after a medical study indicated brain damage was found in nearly 99 percent of former NFL players whose brains were donated for scientific research. Urshchel suffered a concussion two years ago.
Defenceman Andrei Markov will not be returning next season to the Monctreal Canadiens.
