Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce Response to 2026-2027 Budget
The Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce acknowledges the Government of New Brunswick’s 2026–2027 budget and its important investments in healthcare, housing, education, and infrastructure—areas critical to supporting communities and businesses across the province. However, the Chamber is concerned that the budget does not present a clear, coordinated strategy for long-term economic growth, particularly in light of a projected $1.39 billion deficit and rising provincial debt.
As CEO Shannon Merrifield noted, “New Brunswick cannot spend its way out of this. We need to see a clear, coordinated plan to grow the economy in a way that strengthens revenues over time.” While there are positive steps, including targeted supports for business growth and workforce development, the Chamber emphasizes the need for a stronger, more aligned approach to economic expansion. Strategic opportunities in regions like Saint John—particularly in trade, energy, and industry—must be fully leveraged to drive sustainable growth, strengthen revenues, and ensure long-term fiscal stability for New Brunswick.
