Gallant Gov’t Axes Plan To Privatize Hospital Food Services

The provincial government has announced it no longer plans to privatize food services in New Brunswick hospitals.

The French company Sodexo was expected to take over food, environmental and portering services.

The move upset the Vitalite Health Network and unions including CUPE which feared the loss of 280 jobs.

A joint labour-government task force was set up last December and determined privatization was not the solution.

CUPE spokesperson Norma Robinson said petitions, rallies and other efforts to halt privatization have been successful.

The Department of Health is now asking health authorities to come up with a plan to transform the delivery of food services.
