Gas Bar, Restaurant Construction On Bayside Drive Delayed

Common Council has hit reset on a proposal to redevelop the old Petro-Canada site at the corner of Bayside Drive and Mount Pleasant Avenue East.

There are plans to build a Petro-Canada gas station and convenience store, a car wash, and an A&W restaurant and drive-thru there.

As part of the process, staff wanted to remove an existing condition that forced the former car wash to close at 8 p.m.

But Mayor Don Darling says the amendment was not mentioned in the public notice posted on the city’s website.

“It’s an oversight that we made,” says Darling. “The recommendation in the kit was to restart, to err on the side of caution. It’s the right thing to do.”

The concern was first raised at the March 12th Common Council meeting by local resident Claire Fairweather, who also expressed concerns about traffic safety and late-night noise from the proposed drive-thru.

A staff report says the proponent has agreed to mitigate potential noise by adding trees, shrubs or a fence, but does not want the hours of operations to be restricted.

The application will be re-advertised and go back to Planning Advisory Committee, and a public hearing will take place on May 7.
