Happy 237th Birthday To Saint John

Saint John is celebrating its 237th birthday on Wednesday.

It was on this day in 1785 that Saint John became the first incorporated city in what is now known as Canada.

It is also Loyalist Day in the Port City, marking the 239th anniversary since the landing of the Loyalists in 1783.

May 18 was officially proclaimed Loyalist Day 200 years later in 1983 by the lieutenant-governor at the time, George F.G. Stanley.

The 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (The Loyal Company) will commemorate the day with a customary 21-gun salute at the Barrack Green Armoury at 11 a.m. The event is open to the public.

Saint John stands on unceded traditional Wolastoqey territory.
