Herds Of Deer A Common Sight In April

Keep your eyes peeled for deer.

Deer Biologist with the Department of Natural Resources Joe Kennedy says herds of 20 to 50 deer or more in field, is not uncommon, especially at this time of year, “They tend to group in family clusters, but they will also herd up. It is common to have deer in groups or herds in the winter time, but then they keep that structure in the spring. Deer are noticed more in April than in other months because the deer are hungry after going through the long winter and are coming out into the fields to get some vegetation that is starting to grow up.”

Kennedy says this is especially important for motorists. Deer may choose to cross roads in herds, “Deer are primarily more active in the mornings and evenings, that is when we see them and that is when they come to the edge of the roadways. It is very responsible for motorists to be very conscious of deer activity during the mornings and evenings in the month of April.”
