New Brunswick drivers will pay even more to fill up their vehicle’s fuel tank come April 1.
The province’s carbon tax is set to increase to $40 per tonne from $30 per tonne as required by the federal carbon backstop.
Along with that comes a 2.21-cent-per-litre increase in the carbon tax for gasoline and a 2.68-cent-per-litre increase for diesel.
Finance Minister Ernie Steeves says it will generate 40-million dollars in revenue which will be invested back into the economy.
“Addressing climate change is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play,” Steeves said in a news release. “These amendments will allow New Brunswick to take another important step toward addressing its effects.”
New Brunswick implemented its own carbon tax plan last year to replace the federally-imposed carbon tax.
The made-in-New Brunswick approach applies to 20 separate fuels.
