Almost 844, 000 illegal cigarettes have been seized by the Department of Justice and Public Safety’s Contraband Enforcement Unit in the first six months of operation.
The mandate of the unit is to prevent the production, distribution and sale of illegal tobacco.
17 seizures of illegal cigarettes in communities including Fredericton, Edmundston, Miramichi and Bathurst were made between April and September.
The estimated value of the cigarettes is over $506, 000.
