“I Don’t Scare Easily”: SPCA Director Of Animal Welfare Nanette Pearl After Shots Fired

Codiac RCMP is investigating after four shots were fired into the front of the Greater Moncton SPCA.

Director of Animal Welfare Nanette Pearl says last Tuesday when they came in, they found the damage, and reported it to the RCMP.

In her opinion, the surveillance footage suggests this was planned in advance.

“The camera shows a pickup truck with a cab on it slowing at the corner, the individual getting out and going across our neighbour’s lawn, shooting from across the road, across our guard rail sort of thing,” says Pearl.

Pearl says she doesn’t scare easily and is angry, but some other members of the staff are a little more reserved.

“So we’ve asked our staff that are after hours to ensure they go to their cars together, to not leave their coworker behind, [and] make sure that everybody leaves the building at the same time, that sort of thing,” says Pearl.

She adds as for motive, when animals are involved, emotions can be heightened.

“Usually if it’s an emotional reaction it happens in the heat of the moment, so if somebody comes in and they’re angry with us, it’s usually verbal and huffy and puffy in our lobby,” says Pearl. “Nobody wakes up at 2 o’clock in the morning and decides to shoot the SPCA.”

Pearl says no animals or staff were injured, although some volunteers are a little shaken.
