An international group of runners is set to pass through the Maritimes this spring as part of the Peace Run Canada initiative.
Ten members from seven countries — including Mexico, Australia, Moldova, Switzerland, Slovakia, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Canada — will begin their journey in Halifax, connecting with local communities, government officials, and more than 3,500 students at events across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
Stops along the route include a ceremony in Mahone Bay, N.S., honouring Karen Furneaux, a three-time Olympian and two-time world champion in sprint kayaking. There will also be the installation of a Peace Pole in Shediac, N.B., and a Peace Tree dedication at the Ravens Rest Retreat in Moosebrook, N.S.
The Peace Run has traversed 160 nations on all seven continents since 1987, with organizers saying it symbolizes “humanity’s universal aspiration for a more peaceful world.”
They note the initiative was inspired by visionary Sri Chinmoy to give citizens a dynamic way to express their hopes and dreams for a more harmonious world. Chinmoy once said, “A world of peace will be the supreme achievement of humanity.”
