Irving Oil refinery air quality renewal takes effect in July

The air quality approval for the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John has been renewed.

The provincial government says the new five-year approval takes effect on July 16, replacing the current one that’s set to expire the day before.

The refinery processes around 313,000 barrels of crude oil daily, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, propane, and home heating oil, according to a government release.

The renewal follows a public consultation process that ran from January to May, ensuring community input before the final decision

Under the Clean Air Act, industries must meet air quality standards to minimize pollution and protect public health.

The refinery must comply with approval conditions that outline emission controls and environmental requirements.

The Department of Environment and Local Government has made the full approval details available for public review.
