Quispamsis town council discussed issues and concerns surrounding the controversial animal control bylaw in the town.
Mayor Gary Clark says town staff will look into the bylaw and come back with recommendations, including how the town will determine whether or not an animal should be deemed dangerous.
Councillor Kirk Miller doesn’t think the town should make that decision. He says he’d rather that be done by an outside source through a vet, or animal shelter.
Right now, animals in Quispamsis are sent to a shelter in Moncton with a high kill rate, leaving many community members wondering why the town doesn’t deal with the Saint John SPCA.
The SPCA in Saint John did not want to strike a partnership in Quispamsis because of their animal control bylaw.
Rob Hunt was a canine handler in the US Airforce for nine years.
Hunt submitted a letter to the town of Quispamsis and hopes to be involved in discussions with town staff regarding their animal control bylaw.
He says a lot of the town staff’s recommendations are moving in the right direction, but was a little discouraged by the desire to remain control of the decision making process over what constitutes a fierce or dangerous animal.
Hunt says he doesn’t want to get rid of the bylaw, he just wants to make sure that animals who may be an occasional nuisance aren’t destroyed because they’re a nuisance.
