Joseph Paul Irving has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Cynthia. The mood was tense in the courtroom after the verdict was delivered, with sherrifs quickly bringing under control a scuffle between emotional family members.
The 53 year old South End man admitted to strangling his wife with both his bare hands and an extension cord when she announced she was leaving the relationship. Relatives testified to a history of controlling behaviour and Cynthia’s increasing unhappiness.
Cynthia Irving was found dead in her Carmarthen Street home in March of last year. She worked as a pharmacy tech at the Millidgeville Superstore.
A presentence report and victim impact statements will be gathered, and Irving’s sentencing is scheduled for March 10th.
