The first part of February was very busy with serious fires in Saint John including a deadly blaze on the West side.
Mark Wilson of the Saint John Fire Department tells CHSJ News the building on St. James West where one man died suffered a lot of fire, smoke and water damage.
He says the building is severly damaged and is now in the hands of the property owner and his insurance company.
A couple of the fires originated in the kitchen so Wilson warns that anyone cooking with hot oil on the stove should never leave it unattended and never wear loose-fitting clothing while cooking near flammable liquids.
Wilson tells the cause of another serious early morning fire on Lancaster Avenue on February 9th is undetermined because the building collapsed and it was not safe for the investigator to climb into the basement or the rubble.
Another kitchen fire on Martha Avenue on January 31st involved the rescue of a girl trapped in an apartment and Wilson says she did the right thing by alerting firefighters to her location so they could find her and get her out.
