A local farmer’s market which which came close to shutting down for good last year, has changed hands with Kredl’s in Hampton being bought by Mrs. Dunster’s in Sussex.
Co-owner of Mrs. Dunsters, Blair Hislop tells CHSJ News this will give the company an opportunity to capitalize on the desire of consumers for locally produced food.
“If we look at our top selling items coming out of the bakery, and the fastest growing items, are all the things that are made with fresh, local ingredients. So this is a big, big trend,” says Hislop.
“Years ago, 70 or 80-percent of the food consumed in Atlantic Canada was produced in Atlantic Canada. Today that number is something like 6-percent. We have the farmers here and the capability to grow our own fruits and vegetables for the most part and we should be doing more of that.”
Hislop says he will likely be hiring more people but not physically expanding the market.
Kredl’s started out as a small farm stand in 1980 and has now evolved into a year round market.
