Lack Of Public Transit Forcing Immigrants To Move

If you don’t have good public transit, you will not be able to attract immigrants to the province over the long term. That conclusion reached by Yves Bourgeois, Director of the Urban and Community Studies Institute at U-N-B.

He says 15 per cent of immigrants depend on public transit to get around and it turns out to be a lot cheaper for them to make their way about in larger cities such as Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto than have the big expense of running a car in this province which can exceed 10 thousand dollars a year just for a compact car.

Bourgeois says half of the immigrants who come to the province leave within five years. The main reason is not being able to land a job that’s suited to their qualifications.
