Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott says even though federal legislation recommends the legal age to buy marijuana be set at 18, that can be changed by the provinces and territories or during the parliamentary process.
Philpott says the federal legislation is following the recommendation of the task force on legalistion of marijuana after a lot of consultation which discovered younger Canadians are among the higest users of marijuana in the world.
The Canadian Medical Association is recommending the legal age to buy pot be 21 with the warning that marijuana is toxic to the developing brain.
