Legislation aims to expand Order of N.B. nominees

New Brunswickers could soon see more names put forward for the province’s highest honour.

The government has introduced amendments to the Order of New Brunswick Act that would let the advisory council recommend up to 10 nominees each year.

The current limit is five, according to a government release.

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours said that the changes are meant to ensure nominees reflect every region, language group, and background.

The bill also proposes governance changes to the advisory council. The plan is to have university presidents join the council for up to three years.

Members chosen by the Executive Council can stay until they choose to leave or are replaced. Also, the council can suggest removing a member if needed.

The Order of New Brunswick recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the province’s social, cultural, or economic well-being.

More than 200 people have been invested in the order since it was created in 2000.
