Let Us Keep Saint John Beautiful: A Call to Action for Cleaner Neighbourhoods

Saint John is a city full of history, character, and heart—but like any community, it needs care. One of the simplest yet most powerful ways we can improve our city is by keeping it clean and well-maintained. That starts with encouraging landlords and property owners to take pride in their buildings. If you see a property that is unpainted or neglected, do not be afraid to speak up. A respectful conversation can go a long way in inspiring change.

But we do not have to stop there. If you are able, lend a hand—paint a fence, mow a patch of grass, or pick up litter in your neighbourhood. These small acts of kindness and responsibility add up. People love to live in well-kept cities, and when our streets, homes, and buildings reflect care, it lifts the entire community.

Saint John is home to the largest collection of Victorian homes and 19th-century buildings in North America. These architectural gems are part of our identity, built during the “Golden Age of Sail.” Preserving them is not just about aesthetics—it is about honouring our history and creating a welcoming environment for future generations.

Of course, cleanliness is just one piece of the puzzle. We also need more affordable housing, food security, recreational facilities, and significantly more post-secondary education opportunities. Saint John has long been underserved in these areas, despite contributing heavily in taxes. Keeping our industrial tax revenue local and investing in education would help address the structural challenges we face.

Still, change begins with community. When we take care of our surroundings, we teach pride, purpose, and respect. We show that we believe in Saint John—and that we are willing to work together to make it better.

Let us keep Saint John beautiful. Let us take action, one building, one yard, one street at a time.

Love ❤️ Saint John, NB.
