Volunteer firefighters in the Kingston and Westfield East Local Service Districts are rescuing people from dangerous situations even though they are not supposed to legally. The Deputy Chief of the Long Reach Fire Service,
Darren White is hoping that changes with a vote tomorrow to increase the tax rate by 2 cents per thousand dollars of assessment to pay for training, equipment and insurance. In dollars and cents, if approved, the property tax bill on a home worth 100 thousand dollars would rise by something like 2 dollars a year.
White says when people realise there are no other people around, other than the volunteer firefighters, who will go on the ice in the early morning hours in February to rescue someone who might be one of their neighbours, then they’re very supportive.
