Man arrested after report of person armed with rifle

Saint John police say one person has been arrested in connection with a firearm investigation uptown.

Police said they received a report of someone with a rifle in the 50-block of Waterloo Street over the noon hour on Monday.

“On arrival, officers located the 45-year-old suspect matching the description provided by the caller,” police said in a news release on Tuesday.

Police arrested the man, who they say was found to be in possession of a .22 calibre rifle, ammunition and knives.

The accused appeared in court on Tuesday on a charge of unauthorized possession of a non-restricted firearm.

The man was released on an undertaking and is due back in court on Sept. 5.

Police said no injuries were reported during the incident.
