Man Charged After Kingsbrae Garden Fire Due In Court

A man accused of vandalizing and setting fire to the Kingsbrae Garden Café in St. Andrews is due back in court Thursday for a bail hearing.

Christopher Briand is facing five charges — arson, break and enter, theft, breach of probation, and mischief.

Briand, 26, of Ontario was found fit to stand trial after a five-day psychiatric assessment last week.

Emergency crews were called to Kingsbrae Garden on March 31 after a staff member dropping off items saw debris and smelled smoke.

The RCMP have said a man was arrested inside the building after the fire was extinguished.

Brad Henderson, operations director of Kingsbrae Garden, has said the fire was contained to the women’s washroom area but there was smoke damage and vandalism throughout the building.

Henderson said they hope to have the café repaired before the gardens reopen on May 17.
