Man dies in police custody in Miramichi

New Brunswick’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a man in police custody in Miramichi.

Miramichi Police Force officers arrested a man for theft and mischief at a restaurant on Sunday evening.

The man was taken back to the police station and placed in cells, according to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT).

“The following morning, officers attended the male’s cell to release him. The male was unresponsive,” SiRT said in a news release on Wednesday.

Paramedics were called and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Serious Incident Response Team was notified and has taken over the investigation.

SiRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest involving any police officer in New Brunswick.
