Man seriously hurt after ATV collides with RCMP cruiser

One person suffered serious injuries after his all-terrain vehicle collided with an RCMP cruiser, according to an independent police watchdog.

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) said the head-on crash happened on a rural road in Tobique Narrows on the evening of July 3.

“The ATV driver suffered a serious leg injury and was transported to hospital. The officer suffered minor injuries,” SiRT said in a news release on Thursday.

“Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.”

SiRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in New Brunswick.

Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid.
