Marigolds Project Could Be Even Bigger This Year

More schools have come on board the Marigolds Project in the Saint John region from St. Stephen to Sussex.

A world record was set two years ago and founder Barry Ogden tells CHSJ News more than 3 million marigolds have been planted over the last 18 years.

Students will be soon growing the marigolds in their classrooms for planting in the spring.

He adds ever since the planting of the marigolds began 18 years ago, vandalism of flowers and gardens has gone down.

The annual awards have been handed out to the Business Community Anti-Poverty Initiative and the Promise Partnership Programme at U-N-B Saint John where students mentor and teach children at Hazen White St. Francis. Volunteer Betty Hitchcock who helps children to read at Centennial Elementary School along with Bob Fairweather, who takes care of the lunch programme at the school, are also being honoured.
