Mayor Calls For Feds To Make Sure City Does Not Get Slammed By Costs Of Dealing With Pot Legalization

Mayor Don Darling has been given the blessing of his council to send a letter to the federal government about the costs associated with the legalization of cannabis come July 2018.

He says Saint John can not afford the training associated with the detection of cannabis impaired driving which according to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities can be as much as $15,000 per officer.

Mayor Darling also wants to make sure the municipality isn’t saddled with all of the start up costs either.

Finance Committee chair, Councillor David Merrithew told his colleagues he hopes other municipalities send a similar letter.

Merrithw says the city will end up picking up the enforcement bill and the social backlash from all of this and the city needs to be in the conversation from the get go.
