Mayor Wants Market Study Done On What Homebuyers Want

Before you can attract more people to live in the uptown and south end, you’ll have to know what you can build that will be appealing.

Mayor Don Darling sees momentum happening with more people seemingly interested in moving to the city center but, in his discussions with them, he has found out what’s on offer isn’t what they’re desiring.

Darling says there is a need to carry out a market study so they’re not flying blind.

Meantime, there has been a delay in the recommendation about whether or not to proceed with development along Sandy Point Road at Rockwood Park. The Growth Committee is expected to get the recommendation next month.

Dick Powell lives next door to the property being considered for development. He says city planners wanted to see development take place there several years ago and have now brought it back with a new Council which Powell calls “disappointing”.

Darling sees that area as being an attractive place to live and would serve to grow the tax base which the city desperately needs. Powell argues there are several areas nearby that are ready for development but he doesn’t see people flocking there.
