Mayor Mel Norton questions whether costs at Saint John Transit could be reduced with the use of smaller buses on routes where there are fewer riders and during off peak hours.
Smaller buses are used in Calgary but Saint John Transit General Manager Frank McCarey is not convinced, saying the life span of the lighter, smaller buses has not turned out to be as long as the transit people in Calgary had hoped.
He will look further at the possibility of using heavier duty smaller buses that could last longer.
Saint John Transit is struggling with a deficit estimated at between 400 and 800 thousand dollars.
