Memorial To Afghanistan Mission To Be Unveiled This Week

A memorial to those 158 Canadian soldiers who lost their lives in the Afghanistan mission will be unveiled in Saint John this week by the parents of private David Greenslade who lost his life in 2007 along with five other soldiers in a roadside bombing.

CHSJ News spoke to Laurie Greenslade, David’s mother.

“That day Kate and Ken Stannix who lost their son, Chris, the same day as David, they’ll be attending the ceremony,” Greenslade tells CHSJ News, “and we’ll be unveiling the sign with the 158 names, it’s going to be very emotional, meaningful and we’re happy that it’s finally going to be there.”

Nancy Morris is the event coordinator for the Afghanistan Memorial and says 10 years ago they did a Red Friday Support the Troops Rally at Long Wharf.

“With all the issues people are having with PTSD, we just thought you know what, it’s time,” says Morris. “It’s time to get out and let the troops know we still remember, we still support them, we’re behind them 100-percent.”

It’s happening this Friday at 11 in the morning at Harbour Passage and is open to the public. Where it is Red Friday everyone is encouraged to wear red to show support for the troops and their families.
