Merrifield acclaimed in Grand Bay-Westfield

Brittany Merrifield remains mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield.

Merrifield was acclaimed to the position after no one else ran in the May 11 municipal elections.

Merrifield expressed pride in the work council has accomplished in the last five years.

“We’ve spent a lot of time building stronger regional relationships,” she said. “We’ve advanced projects that had been talked about for years, sometimes decades.”

Merrifield said an advantage of being acclaimed was she was able to watch the results and have some idea of who she’d be working with for the next four years.

But she said acclamation does have its problems.

“My concern is that because there is not a race for mayor that we’ll have lower turnout at the polls,” Merrifield said.

“Grand Bay-Westfield always comes out and they always show up and they always do their duty, but that would be my one concern about that.”
