Students in Grades 6 to 8 from St. Martin’s school will be attending Bayside Middle School next fall following a decision by the District Education Council.
St. Martin’s Mayor Betty Anne Chatterton telling us she is not happy with the decision.
She says every child should have the opportunity to get the best education they can and it’s not always middle school in the city area.
DEC members voted 4-3 in favour of reconfiguration. CHSJ News asked chair Rob Fowler if having some of the missing DEC members at the meeting would have impacted the outcome.
He says it’s difficult to say since he doesn’t know how they were going to vote.
The meeting did have quorum. Fowler says the decision is final adding the Minister of Education only gets involved in school closures.
The DEC members who did not support the motion noted the travel time for students coming to Saint John saying they disagreed with spending more than an hour on a bus especially in the winter months.
