The announcement of the new ferry coming to Deer Island is welcoming news for our local MLA.
Rick Doucet for Fundy-The Isles-Saint John West says it’s a case of the community coming together with solid ideas to change the government’s mind. He says, originally, the provincial government was going to get a new 18-car ferry to replace the old 24-car ferry in Deer Island, but reasons were brought forward by the Islanders as to why they needed the space, and government changed their minds.
The new Deer Island ferry also comes with a pretty price tag.
Doucet says it’s pretty incredible when you think about the type of costs that are involved with a small ferry, “The ferry, with the design work, is about $8.5 million dollars, so it’s a pretty expensive piece of equipment.”
Doucet says only Islanders know first-hand of the issues they face when a ferry breaks down, so it’s extremely important to have a vessel that’s up to standards to keep up with day-to-day operations.
The Abnaki 2, which holds 24 cars, will be in service this summer.
