“It’s not black and white, but it’s worth at least trying to save.”
That coming from Charlotte-Campobello MLA John Ames on the future of the old St. Stephen Town Hall.
He tells us, “I think there’s a misconception in the public, that people believe that if it’s going to be saved that it will be on the backs of the taxpayers of St. Stephen solely. But, I don’t see that happening whatsoever. I think it’s going to be a partnership.”
He says the partnership could be private investment, different jurisdictions, or levels of government, who invest in the property — but whatever happens, Ames says we need to give it more time before going ahead with demolition.
“If we’re going to spend close to a quarter of a million dollars tearing this place down, we should make sure we do our due dilligence. If we can salvage a place and get it off our hands and have someone put some money into it of their own, then not only would the place be saved, but we’d be saving the Town [of St. Stephen] maybe some money too.”
Ames says after meeting with St. Stephen Mayor John Quartermain, and MP Karen Ludwig, he is hopeful something postitive will be done.
