Moncton Man Charged After Fire At RCMP Building

A Moncton man has been charged following a fire which was deliberately set at the Codiac RCMP detachment.

Around 2:50 a.m. Saturday, officers noticed a man in the lobby of the detachment. Police say a fire was started and the man fled the scene. An officer quickly extinguished the fire and no one was injured.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. the same day, RCMP received a report of threats being made outside a residence on John Street. They say the suspect matched the description of the man in the lobby earlier and arrested a 46-year-old man.

Joseph Jude Gallant was charged with failing to appear in court and was remanded into custody by way of a tele-remand.

He appeared in Moncton Provincial Court on Monday and was charged with the following charges:

  • arson
  • two counts of uttering threats
  • two counts of assaulting a peace officer
  • resisting arrest

Gallant was also charged with uttering threats and mischief on an unrelated matter.

He was sent for a 30-day psychological evaluation and is scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court on Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m.
