The entrance to the New Brunswick legislature has been lit up in gold this week, in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness month.
This is something that is very close to the Speaker’s heart.

Moncton Centre MLA and Chris Collins lost his son Sean in 2007 after a courageous battle with the disease.
Collins says the statistics are startling, “There has been a 30 per cent increase in children’s cancer since 1975. Right now there is an incidence of 18 of every 100, 000 children will get cancer. In 1975, it was 13. It is not a rare disease. One in every 280 kids in Canada will get cancer before the age of 20. We need to talk about it and we need to admit that we have an issue.”

Collins adds, that little is being done to fund research for children with cancer, “Children appear in about 100 per cent of those fundraising ads. That is very frustrating to see. I think that these big organizations with regards to children’s cancer, have a moral obligation to invest much more in research.”
