Monday Morning Sports For February 29th

In the NHL, Tampa Bay moved ahead of the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference after a 4-1 win…..The teams with the two best records met and Chicago edged Washington 3-2…..St. Louis downed Carolina 5-2……It was Minnesota over Florida 3-1…….Anaheim defeated Los Angeles 4-2….San Jose over Vancouver 4-1 and Edmonton got by the Islanders 3-1.

The New York Rangers have traded for veteran center Eric Staal from the Carolina Hurricanes…..The Los Angeles Kings have acquired right wing Kris Versteeg from the Carolina Hurricanes and the Washington Capitals acquired forward Daniel Winnik from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

At the Rumble in the Station, the Mill Rats trailed at half time but opened up a 23 point lead in the third quarter and beat Halifax 107-95 to take over 1st place in the Atlantic Division. Doug Herring Junior led Saint John with 26 points.

The Kennebecasis Valley High Crusaders won their first girls “AAA” high school basketball title in 40 years with a 72-55 win over Fredericton High. In the boys championship, Fredericton High won 90-65 over K-V-H-S.

In the NBA, the Raptors lost to Detroit 114-101 after winning 4 in a row.

Alberta’s Chelsea Carey edged Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville 7-6 to win the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The best performer of the Atlantic University Sports Track and Field Championships has to be UNB’s Grace Annear of Hampton. Not only did she win the 1000 metres but she also won the 600 metres in record time. Annear is now ranked first nationally.
