Money For Transit, Housing In Saint John

Saint John is getting more than $4.6 million for transit and housing initiatives in the city.

The money is coming from the province’s Regional Development Corporation and the federal government.

Common Council executed a letter of offer with the provincial corporation back in early April.

Last week, they approved adjustments to the 2022 budget to take advantage of the funding opportunity.

“There is no requirement for the city to match these contributions,” said a staff report to council.

Saint John Transit will get $1.1 million, with the remaining $3.5 million earmarked for affordable housing and neighbourhoods.

A condition of the funding, according to the staff report, is that “final outcomes must be achieved by January 31st, 2023.”

As for what the money will be used for, Coun. Gary Sullivan, who chairs the city’s finance committee, said details will roll out “in due course.”
