More federal funding is coming for energy efficiency upgrades at the Imperial Theatre in Saint John.
Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long announced an additional $275,000 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) on Monday.
The funding is in addition to the more than $2.1 million that was unveiled just over a year ago, a spokesperson with ACOA confirmed to our newsroom.
“The City of Saint John’s Imperial Theatre is a beloved attraction for citizens and visitors from across the country,” Long said in a news release.
“I can’t think of a better day to highlight our government’s energy efficiency investment than on Earth Day – together we are strengthening this significant historical theatre, empowering healthier communities, and contributing to a strong economy.”
Upgrades include replacing the building’s aging HVAC system and gas-powered boiler with a new heat pump.
Executive Director Angela Campbell said previously that cooling systems will also be added to the lobby area, administration offices, and backstage. Currently, there is only air conditioning in the auditorium and on the stage.
The theatre’s lighting system will also be upgraded with more efficient LED technology as part of the work.
Campbell said the modernization project will cut the 111-year-old building’s energy usage by around 62 per cent annually.
