More Than a Game

Dear Saint John,

I’ll admit it. I’ve been watching Team Canada at the FIFA World Cup, and I’ve found myself getting caught up in it. Not because I know much about soccer. I don’t. It’s because there’s something contagious about hope.

Watching thousands of people cheer for the same team reminds me that every now and then, we allow ourselves to believe together. We believe that one great pass, one save, or one unexpected moment can change everything.

It’s easy to forget how powerful shared belief can be.

At the Human Development Council, we spend a lot of time talking about the challenges communities across New Brunswick are facing. Sometimes the challenges seem overwhelming. The problems are real, and they’re complicated.

But I’ve also noticed something else. The people doing this work haven’t stopped believing.

Community organizations believe lives can improve.

Volunteers believe a meal, a ride, a conversation, or a warm place to sit can matter.

Researchers believe that better information leads to better decisions.

Community leaders believe that communities can become stronger than they are today.

None of those beliefs guarantee success. Neither does pulling on a Team Canada jersey. But without belief, it’s hard to imagine progress at all.

Whether it’s a soccer match, a neighbourhood project, or a community trying to solve difficult problems, remarkable things happen when people decide something better is possible.

Maybe that’s what I’ve really been cheering for.

Not just a team.

The reminder that hope isn’t naïve.

Sometimes, hope is simply choosing to believe that today’s score doesn’t have to be tomorrow’s. That tomorrow can be better than today.

Still hopeful,

Andrea
