Movie tariffs would impact N.B., says premier

There are growing concerns about how movie tariffs could impact the entertainment industry.

U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to impose a 100 per cent tariff on foreign movies.

It would have an impact on many Canadian provinces, including New Brunswick.

Premier Susan Holt said we have a rapidly growing film sector in the province.

“The threat of the U.S. tariffs is one that is serious and that matters to us, not only to the Torontos or Vancouvers or Montreals of the world,” Holt told reporters this week.

“We have some great film producers growing their business and doing more and more things in New Brunswick,”

Holt said she raised the issue with the prime minister during the First Ministers’ meeting this week.

The U.S. president threatened to impose the tariffs as he said America’s film industry was dying “a very fast death.”

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump argued that incentives from other countries are pulling productions away from Hollywood.

The Canadian Media Producers Association has warned that such a move could significantly impact Canada’s film industry.
