An $82-billion aid package to help Canadians endure the COVID-19 pandemic is one step closer to being passed in Ottawa.
MPs supported Bill C-13 at all stages following a debate in the House of Commons which ended early Wednesday morning.
The emergency session was to take place Tuesday but ground to a halt with concerns from the Conservative party of components that would give the finance minister major power to spend money without parliamentary approval.
Conservative leader Andrew Scheer called it a “power grab.”
Following the vote, Scheer issued a statement saying his party has secured a number of concessions with the Liberals before agreeing to the package.
He says it included removing sections that permitted the government to raise taxes and unlimited spending powers.
Scheer says they also negotiated for a sunset clause on the legislation and regular reports to parliament, he says were all agreed upon by the governing Liberals.
The legislation is now before the Senate for its approval Wednesday.
