Municipalities Will Have To Become Age Friendly

Municipalities will have to become age friendly in the years ahead especially in places with aging population. That assessment comes in a paper released by the Institute for Research on Public Policy.

Glenn Miller of the Canadian Urban Institute says suburban municipalities have made cosmetic changes with more park benches and lighting but those aren’t nearly enough. He argues there will have to be major changes with their land use plans including higher density housing.

He points out older people in the suburbs who want to downsize find a shortage of housing options and then they can be stuck if, at some point, they decide not to drive anymore because the suburbs built after the Second World War were constructed with cars in mind and not pedestrians.
