N.B. Adoption Foundation Reaching More People During Pandemic

More than 400 children in New Brunswick are without permanent families.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month.

New Brunswick Adoption Foundation executive director Suzanne Kingston says many events this month will look different due to COVID-19 including many virtual sessions planned.

“We’re pretty optimistic. Based on our experience since mid-March, we have actually offered more programming and are reaching more people.”

Kingston says the adoption process continues despite the pandemic.

“Families who are raising kids who had a lot of trauma, their needs have increased dramatically. You know, all of us are struggling in different ways through this crisis.”

More than 60 percent of children in provincial care are under 11 years old.

New Brunswick stats show about 50 young people will age out of the system every year without finding a permanent family.

Some of the topics being addressed virtually this month include trauma awareness and diversity in adoptive families.
