New Brunswick has sent 150 athletes, coaches, managers and chaperones to the 2023 North American Indigenous Games.
The nine-day event in the Halifax area features 16 different sports, including three traditional Indigenous sports: 3D archery, canoe/kayak and box lacrosse.
New Brunswick athletes will be competing in eight of those sports, according to a news release from the province.
“These Games serve as an important opportunity to promote and celebrate Indigenous culture, and they play a vital role in Canada’s efforts toward reconciliation,” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Arlene Dunn said in the release.
The Games will bring together more than 5,000 athletes, coaches, and mission staff from more than 750 Indigenous Nations across North America.
It is considered the largest multi-sport and cultural event ever to be held in Atlantic Canada.
The Games began on July 15 and continue through July 23.
