N.B. highlights International Day on violence against women

New Brunswick is raising awareness about violence against women as part of national recognition efforts.

On Tuesday, the province marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Minister responsible for women’s equality, Lyne Chantal Boudreau, said the day is a reminder to act.

She said the observance also launched the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which continues until December 10.

“Gender-based violence affects everyone, which is why New Brunswick recognizes it as both an epidemic and a systemic crisis,” Boudreau said in a government release.

She noted that some groups face greater risk, including Black and Indigenous women and girls, women of colour, non-binary people, members of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, women in rural areas, and people with disabilities.

Boudreau also pointed out the serious issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.

She mentioned that their families and communities experience deep pain and are still pushing for justice and real changes in the system.

She said the province has committed $20 million to enhance gender-based violence services.

Boudreau added that New Brunswick has one of the highest rates of reported intimate partner violence in Canada, with rural communities especially affected.

The minister encouraged residents to take part in everyday actions, such as listening to survivors, speaking out against violence, and supporting organizations working to end gender-based violence.

“If you or someone you know is experiencing violence or needs support, call 211 in New Brunswick to connect with local services and resources,” Boudreau said.
