There is a new person at the helm of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party.
Chris Thompson was elected interim leader of the provincial political party over the weekend.
“It’s an honour,” Thompson wrote in a tweet posted late Sunday afternoon.
Thompson ran for the New Brunswick NDP in New Maryland-Sunbury in September’s provincial election, finishing in last place with 1.5 per cent of the total votes.
He takes over the party leadership from Mackenzie Thomason, who resigned as interim leader last month following the September provincial election.
The New Brunswick NDP secured just 1.66 per cent of the popular vote, down from just over five per cent in 2018.
The party has been without a permanent leader since Jennifer McKenzie stepped down in February of 2019.
Officials scheduled a leadership convention for August of last year but had to scrap it after the lone candidate failed the vetting process.
A second convention set for this past June was postponed due to COVID-19.
