NB NDP Prepare For Leadership Race

The New Brunswick NDP will announce details of the party’s leadership race this weekend.

Jennifer McKenzie stepped down as leader in February after the party failed to win any seats in last fall’s provincial election.

The party scheduled a leadership convention for August but had to scrap it after the lone candidate failed to pass the vetting process.

Officials say the latest race has gathered much more interest, with more than 10 people expressing interest in participating so far.

“Clearly, with this much interest in our leadership contest, the NB NDP is still important to New Brunswickers,” said Cyprien Okana, party president, in a news release Friday.

Interim leader Mackenzie Thomason said they want to show party faithful and voters that they will be ready for either a by-election or general election.

Party officials will hold a news conference on Saturday in Fredericton.
