NB Power Weathers Storm Heavy Winter Well

When it comes to comparing winters, 2014 will always be a stand out for volume of snow, but one record it hasn’t broken is number of power outages.

NB Power says this has been a relatively smooth year for New Brunswick, despite high winds and lots of snow.

Spokesperson Meghan Gerrish says despite doing their best work, not all power outages can be avoided.

“Although we do have a rigorous maintenance program and tend to the equipment and infrastructure on a daily basis, sometimes the equipment has to be replaced and can cause a power outage,” says Gerrish.

Gerrish says they’ve done well this year in part because of increased investment in tree trimming.

“So there’s been a lot of tree maintenance that’s been going on throughout the fall and into the winter, and the spring and summer and we’re just gearing up to continue that for 2015,” says Gerrish.

She adds we’ve been lucky when it comes to the consistency of the snow.

“Last year we had a lot of freezing rain and heavy, wet snow, whereas this year it’s been light and very dry so it doesn’t weigh down the tree limbs and the equipment nearly as much as it had last year,” says Gerrish.

She adds it’s been a good year for NB Power, and they’ve done well in keeping the lights and heat on across the province.
